Darien coach Chris Gerwig was named the state’s Coach of the Year while his senior forward Chris Pardue was named the MVP of the 2014-15 GameTimeCT/New Haven Register All-State Boys Ice Hockey Team.

Gerwig guided his Blue Wave to FCIAC and state championships. Darien defeated Greenwich both of the respective tournament finals – 5-3 in the conference tournament championship and 1-0 in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Boys Ice Hockey Division I Tournament final for Darien’s first state title since 1969. Gerwig’s Blue Wave had a 23-2-1 record this year and he has an 81-17-3 record in his four years at Darien.

The FCIAC had an impressive representation with five of the 12 players on the all-state team. Pardue was joined on it by teammate Will Massie, Greenwich’s Bryan Archino and Kevin Piotrzkowski, and Ridgefield’s Liam Smith.

Pardue, who had the captain’s “C” stitched onto his jersey, scored the lone goal in the state championship game after he scored a pair of goals in Darien’s 3-1 semifinal victory over Xavier. Pardue racked up 47 points with his 20 goals and 27 assists. Pardue was previously selected to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s Division I All-State First Team and the MSG Varsity All-Metro Team.

Massie, a senior goalie, stopped all 23 shots in Darien’s 1-0 victory over Greenwich to register his third shutout of the year. He had a 1.6 goals-against average per game and he was the FCIAC Tournament MVP after making 19 saves in the 5-3 championship victory over Greenwich. Massie was previously named Player of the Year as a selection on the CHSCA Division I All-State First Team and he was also selected to the MSG Varsity All-Metro Team.

Archino, a senior and three-year starting goalie for Greenwich, had four shutouts and a 1.8 goals-against average per game. Archino also made the CHSCA Division I All-State Second Team.

Piotrzkowski, a senior defenseman, had seven goals and 23 assists. He made the CHSCA Division I All-State First Team and received the Greenwich High School Hobey Baker Character Award.

Smith, a senior forward, had 30 goals and 15 assists and he finished with 105 career points (60 goals and 45 assists). He also made the CHSCA All-State and MSG Varsity All-State teams.

The five FCIAC representatives on this all-state team – Pardue, Massie, Archino, Piotrzkowski and Smith – were all previously selected to the 2014-15 All-FCIAC Boys Ice Hockey First Team along with Greenwich forward Matt Lodato, New Canaan forward Patrick Hompe, New Canaan defenseman Max Begoon and Fairfield defenseman Zach Weinstein.
