FCIAC Scholar-Athletes, September, 2017

Katerina Karaiskos, Norwalk

This senior is ranked at the top of her class with a 4.8 GPA while taking a challenging course load.

Katerina is also president of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.

She was named captain of the girls volleyball team for two consecutive years as a junior and senior. She has received much praise from her coaches and teachers for her strong leadership and verbal skills.

Katerina was a recipient of the Brown University Award for her excellence in writing and she also received the AP Scholar Award for her high performance on the Collegeboard exams. She is involved with the BROWN community service club and Link Crew organization at school.

Julia Wilson, Ridgefield

This National Honor Society member has made High Honor Roll and has an unweighted GPA of 3.67.

Julia is currently taking two AP courses and the rest are Honors classes.

A three-year starter for the varsity field hockey team, she scored seven goals in the early portion of this current season.

Julia participated in the First Congregational Church H.O.M.E. Service trip to Orland, Maine for one week for the past three years. She is a member of Lions Heart (community organization).

Christopher Martenson, Staples

This senior has earned First Honors every quarter of his high school career and compiled a 3.9 cumulative GPA. He is a member of National Honor Society and Rho Kappa National Honor Society for Social Studies.

Christopher is co-captain of the boys’ varsity soccer team and the #15 Preston Hirten Jersey Award recipient. As a junior, Christoper was selected to the FCIAC All-West Boys Soccer Team and was a representative to the FCIAC Leadership Conference in August. He was captain of the Everton America NPL 2000 team, played for Everton FC Westchester Academy for two years and will play for AC Connecticut this spring.

He also traveled to Northern Ireland to play in the Foyle Cup with the Everton America/Everton FC Westchester 1999 team.

In partnership with Save the Sound, Christopher has helped organize the cleanup of the Saugatuck River, with Experience Mission, he has worked with Sudanese and Somali refugees in Portland, Maine, and with environmental farming projects/disabled families in Cuba and with DOOR, he has worked on urban and homeless projects in Denver, CO. At Staples, he has been a four-year member of Service League of Boys (SLOBs).

Reid Kagan, Ridgefield

This National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America member became the state champion in Introduction to Business in the Future Business Leaders of America State Competition and he was also recipient of the Outstanding Recognition in Business Award.

Reid has made High Honor/Honor Roll for 12 consecutive quarters to lift his GPA numbers up to 3.95 unweighted and 4.325 weighted.

He is also an integral player for Ridgefield’s strong boys soccer and boys lacrosse programs, having been selected to the 2017 All-FCIAC Boys Lacrosse Second Team. He will attend Vassar College to play lacrosse.

Reid volunteers for several community service organizations. He has served as Vice President and Secretary of the local Lion’s Heart Chapter, donated over 400 hours of his time to the organization and received the Lion’s Heart Torch Bearer Award for Outstanding Service. He is also a member of Ridgefield SafeRides as a co-captain.

Kevin Connolly, Wilton

This senior center midfielder has been captain of the Freshman and JV soccer teams and is currently captain of the Varsity soccer team. He has also been a member of the Varsity Track Team since his freshman year.

Kevin has an unweighted 3.9 GPA while managing a schedule filled with several AP courses. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and is an AP Scholar.

He is President of the Top Inclusion Models Club, a TOPSoccer volunteer, head coach of youth basketball, a SafeRides volunteer, a Student Learning Fund tutor, a St. Baldrick’s Foundation shavee, a member of the Wilton Athletics Steering Committee and recipient of the Saint Michael’s College Book Award for outstanding academic achievement with a social conscience.

Megan Mercer, Danbury

This four-year player and current senior co-captain of the girls volleyball team is a member of the National Honor Society.

Megan has made High Honor Roll all four years of high school while taking all Honors and AP courses and has a 4.3 GPA. She made All-FCIAC Honorable Mention in volleyball last year as a junior and has verbally committed to play volleyball for Southern Connecticut State University.

She also volunteers in the Danbury High School Special Education Department.

Jude Andrzejewski, St. Joseph

This three-year varsity starter and senior captain of St. Joseph’s excellent football program is a member of four national honor societies – the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, English Honor Society and Math Honor Society.

Jude has made High Honor Roll all four years as an Honors/AP student. He was the 2017 Cornell Book Award Winner at St. Joseph.

He was also a member of the baseball team as a freshman and sophomore. He is a volunteer for the Special Olympics and at Trumbull Pop Warner as an assistant coach.

Sophia Kaplan, Wilton

This senior captain of the field hockey team with the unweighted GPA of 4.0 has already committed to play field hockey at Amherst College.

Sophia is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She is a High Honor Roll student and was a recipient of the Smith College Book Award, the CT COLT Award for Excellence in Spanish, and the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists Award of Excellence.

She was selected to the All-FCIAC East Field Hockey Team during her sophomore and junior years. Sophia has also run for the girls outdoor track and field team,.

Sophia is a tutor through a service called The Learning Fund, where proceeds go to charity. She is Vice President of the club Serious Fun and a coach for youth recreational basketball.

Zoe Butchen, Ridgefield

This four-year member of the varsity dance team has consistently made High Honor Roll , has a weighted GPA of 4.5 and is a National Honor Society member.

Zoe is founder of Dance Donations which distributes costumes and dance attire to in-need dance/theater programs. She is a Presidential Volunteer Service Award Gold Recipient, a member of the National Charity League for six years, and a recipient of the 2017 United Way Emerging Hero Award.

She has been a Ridgefield High School Student Government member all four years and currently serves as its secretary.

Maggie Leatherwood, Fairfield Ludlowe

Maggie is a three-year member of the girls cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field programs who was an Honor Roll student in all eight of the first marking periods of her high school career.

She has a 3.8 GPA while taking most Honors courses and is taking AP U.S. History.

She earned the Most Improved Runner Award last year after having been named the freshman MVP her first year.

Maggie is president of the School the World Club.

Anoushka Chatterjee, Norwalk

Anoushka is a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honors Society, and has been an Honor Roll student throughout high school.

She has a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.2 while taking mostly AP and Honors courses.

Anoushka attends AITE and is the only student from that school who is a member of the Norwalk/McMahon cooperative swimming and diving team. She has qualified for several championship meets in her specialty, the 100-yard breaststroke, and hopes to continue her swimming career in college.

Anoushka tutors young children at Kumon Math and Reading Center in Westport. She is also a member of Mayors Youth Leadership Council, a student ambassador for her high school, and plays the cello in the Norwalk Youth Symphony.

Owen Hopwood, Trumbull

This junior is a High Honors student with an unweighted GPA of 4.00 while taking all AP and Honors level courses.

Owen has been a runner during every season of high school for the cross country, indoor and and outdoor track and field teams and plans on doing so every season until he graduates.

He volunteers at an animal shelter and a local youth track camp.

Julia McSpedon, Ridgefield

Julia has made High Honors every semester since her freshman year, has a weighted GPA of 4.78 and is a National Honor Society member.

She is a two-year starter at defense for the field hockey program and was selected All-FCIAC Honorable Mention as a junior. She was also named Outstanding Defender in 2016.

Julia is also a three-year varsity member of the girls indoor track and field team and will be a team captain for the upcoming season, and in the spring she has been a three-year member of the softball team.

She is on the Leadership Committee and has been involved in many other extracurricular activities. She has been a member of the National Charity League since the seventh grade, a longtime member of the Girl Scouts, Saint Mary’s Parish Lifeteen Leadership, Irish Dance, and she has been a camp counselor at Waccabuc Country Club since 2015.

Kayleigh Boyle, Fairfield Ludlowe

This AP Scholar and member of a few honor societies is taking three AP courses this year after having taken three last year. Kayleigh has been a High Honor Roll student throughout high school and she has a 3.9 GPA.

Kayleigh is member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math National Honor Society) and History National Honor Society.

She has been with the girls volleyball program since her freshman year, a varsity member these last two years. She was with the softball program her first two years, switched to the girls outdoor track and field team as her spring sport when she was a junior and is now the school record holder in the javelin.

Kayleigh also finds time to participate in extracurricular activities and volunteer for several community organizations. She is a math tutor, the secretary of AFS service club, and was a member of the Red Cross Club as a freshman and sophomore. Kayleigh volunteers for Operation Hope, St. Baldrick’s, and Fairfield Little League Girls Softball.

Kayleigh Fleming, Trumbull

Kayleigh is a National Honors Society member who has a 3.99 GPA by making High Honor Roll throughout high school. This spring she will be inducted into Quill and Scroll Honors Society.

She is in her third year as a starter of the field hockey team and is a senior captain this year.

Kayleigh is a member of DECA – the club for students who are interested in majoring in business.

She volunteers for Top Soccer, a program which teaches soccer to children who have special needs, and she is also a volunteer coach for and referee for youth field hockey programs.

Maura McNeil, Fairfield Warde

This senior National Honor Society member has been on the Headmaster’s List all four years at Fairfield Warde and she has a 4.3 weighted GPA .

Maura is also a member of Spanish, Math, Science and Latin honors societies. She has received cum laude and maximum cum laude on the Natiolnal Latin Exam and been recognized for the Excellence Award in Social Studies and Scholar Award in English.

She is a solid leader and positive teammate on and off the court for the perennially-strong Warde girls’ volleyball program, having been a varsity player for the last three years.

Maura is founder and co-president of Bracelets for Kids club and a member of RAAFT. She has been volunteering weekly at McKinley Elementary School since her sophomore year.

Katy Saladin, Fairfield Warde

Katy has excelled in the classroom and the pool throughout high school.

She has a 4.09 weighted GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has been recognized on the Healmaster’s List during her freshman, sophomore and junior years and received the Wheaton College Book Award during her junior year.

Two years ago Katy was the Class L state champion in the 100-yard backstroke and unbeaten in that event in dual-meet competition as a sophomore and junior. She earned All-FCIAC Second Team as a sophomore and junior and is now a co-captain for the girls swimming and diving team.

Johnny Blatt, Fairfield Ludlowe

This football player with the 4.5 GPA is a recipient of the AP Scholar with Distinction Award and a proud partner of Unified Sports.

Johnny is the president of the Fairfield Ludlowe High School National Honor Society, vice president of the Math Honor Society and treasurer of the school’s Best Buddies chapter.

He plays bass in the school Chamber Orchestra and is a volunteer at Wakeman Boys and Girls Club.

Claire Christenson, Fairfield Warde

This senior has achieved a 3.7 GPA while taking mostly all Honors and AP classes.

Claire has been a key member of the girls volleyball team which has consistently qualified for conference and state postseason tournaments throughout her career.

She also contributes much of her time to her community as vice president of two school clubs – Bracelets for Kids and Humanities Now – as well a volunteering at a local soup kitchen and for Catwalk for a Cure, coaching volleyball clinics for youngsters, and raising awareness for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (P.O.T.S.).

Quinn Lareau, Fairfield Ludlowe

This junior is an Honor Roll student with a 3.32 GPA while also being a three-season distance runner for the boys cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field programs.

Quinn volunteers for Operation Home, has been a part of student government since his freshman year, and takes part in a music appreciation club and band in school. He has participated in school musicals (West Side Story and Mame) and as a drummer in the pit orchestra.

A versatile athlete, Quinn also enjoys sailing, skiing, biking and playing tennis. He has already run the Fairfield Half Marathon and plans on doing 26.2-mile marathons and more 13.1-mile half marathons in the near future.

Jacqueline Mirabile, Norwalk

Jacqueline is a member of the National Honor Society, secretary for Spanish National Honor Society and a vice president for Science National Honor Society.

She has taken plenty of AP and Honors classes throughout her high school career along with PLTW Biomedical classes. She has a GPA of 4.6 and has been on the Honor Roll while playing field hockey for all four years.

Jacqueline is team captain who earned All-FCIAC Honorable Mention. She was also selected to the NFHCA National Academic Squad in 2016.

She received the Book Award from Syracuse University, she officiates for youth field hockey programs in Norwalk, and volunteers her time at the Stamford Nature Center, her church’s food pantry, and Competitive Edge Field Hockey.

Jacqueline is vice president of the RSPACEE Club. She has also been a part of the Mini-Med Club and Student Ambassadors.

Frances Mirabile, Norwalk

Frances has been a High Honor Roll student throughout high school and achieved a weighted 4.8 GPA while taking mostly AP, Honors and PLTW Engineering classes.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, vice president of the Science Honor Society and treasurer of the Spanish Honor Society.

Frances and her twin sister, Jacqueline, are two of the three captains for Norwalk’s field hockey team and both made All-FCIAC Honorable Mention and the NFHCA National Academic Squad in 2016.

She is a vice president for RSPACEE, a Student Ambassador and a recipient of the Johns Hopkins Book Award.

Frances and her sister both officiate for youth field hockey programs in Norwalk, and volunteer at the Stamford Nature Center, their church’s food pantry, and Competitive Edge Field Hockey.

Michael Neary, Darien

Michael has a 3.76 GPA while taking at least three Honors or AP courses every year of his high school career.

He is a team captain and two-year, two-way starter who has helped the dynasty that is the Darien football program go undefeated and win two state championships the previous two years.

He qualified for the State Open meet in both indoor and outdoor track and field in the shot put and qualified in the discus outdoors.

Michael also is a volunteer middle school YMCA House basketball coach and a member of Safe Rides Darien.

Erin Lynch, Staples

Erin has maintained a 3.7 GPA while taking mostly AP and Honors classes.

She is a member of Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society along with NSHSS Scholar.

Erin holds the center defensive midfield position girls soccer team which has won the 2014 FCIAC championship and made deep runs in the conference and state tournaments more recently.

She volunteers with Al’s Angels and is editor of Inklings, her school newspaper.

Jose Emilo Regio, Westhill

This senior football player has an unweighted GPA of 3.8869, a weighted GPA of 4.7669 and he ranks 30th in GPA in his very large class.

Jose is a member of the National Honors Society and Spanish National Honors Society, he received in academic award from the Rochester Institute of Technology, he scored a 5 on the AP Exam of Computer Science A and he is currently a teacher’s aide for AP Computer Science A.

Jose also continues with his very challenging lineup of course – three AP classes of Science AB (an independent study), Calculus BC and a double period of Physics C.

He was also a volunteer at the Ferguson Library and at the Hope in Motion Walk & Run fundraiser.

Noah Klein, Westhill

Noah serves as captain on the football team and is the Editor in Chief of Westword, the school’s award-winning student publication.

He maintains a 3.49 GPA and has excelled in the classroom while also helping others succeed, as he has been a LanD crew student mentor, and he also takes time to mentor other students who need assistance.

Noah, who plans on pursuing a career in journalism, has served as a student representative on the Student Advisory Council for the Board of Representatives.

Katherine Jenik, Trinity Catholic

This National Honor Society member (junior and senior years) has earned Honors with Distinction every semester of her high school career and has had the highest average in Religion Class each semester from 2014-17.

Katherine was among the prestigious group of 10 youngsters profiled in the September/October Stamford Magazine issue in the 10 Teens to Watch in Stamford feature.

She was a recipient of the AP Scholar Award which is awarded to AP students who score a 3 or higher on three AP exams. She also received the 2017 Villanova University Book Award and 2017 St. Michael’s College Book Award and was nominated for the National Society of High School Scholars (2016-17).

Katherine was awarded the 2017 Brian Bill Memorial Scholarship, 2016 Mickey Lione Jr. Scholarship and 2014 Brian Kelly Award for Sportsmanship in soccer.

She is a senior captain during a fourth season as a member of the varsity girls soccer program and she is also a captain on the girls tennis team.

Among her many leadership activities in high school, Katherine has been Student Council treasurer all four years, the Political Science Club treasurer, and a member of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Leadership Council.

Griffin Ott, Darien

This excellent distance runner for the cross country and track teams has a 4.26 weighted GPA and is historian of the Math Honors Society.

Currently a captain for the boys cross country team, Griffin has personal-best track times of 4:29 in the 1,600 and 9:38 in the 3,200.

Griffin is also treasurer of the Garden Club and a recipient of the Fairfield University Book Award.

Tory Bike, St. Joseph

Tory has a 3.7 GPA, achieving Principal’s Honors while taking all Honors level coursework.

The senior captain is in her fourth year with the girls varsity soccer program and a major reason why she and her Cadets are two-time defending state champions.

Tory has achieved All-FCIAC honors in each of her first three years, she was All-State last year and was recently selected to play in the High School All-American Game on Dec. 2 in Orlando, Fla.

She has been on the Student Council since her freshman year, is president of the Zumba Club, a member of SAAD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), French Club and is the “Maroon and Gold Girl” at pep rallies.

Tory has also volunteered for Special Olympics, and Challenger and Top Soccer programs.

She has verbally committed to play soccer at the University of Rhode Island next fall.

Catrina Sullivan, Danbury

Catrina has earned a 4.25 GPA by having achieved High Honors in every one of her first 12 marking quarters of high school while taking four AP classes and mostly Honors classes the last two years.

She is a captain of the girls volleyball team, having been with the program all four years and on the varsity these last three years as she was the only sophomore on the team two years ago. Last year Catrina was selected to the All-FCIAC Second Team. She is also a captain for the girls basketball and girls tennis teams.

Catrina was selected to the National Honor Society as a senior and has been in Key Club and the Science National Honor Society for two years.

She has volunteered at the Lady Hatters Hoop Camp, a volleyball clinic for middle school youngsters at PAL, and been a referee for PAL youth basketball leagues.

Kim Kockenmeister, Greenwich

Kim is a senior captain of both the varsity girls soccer and girls basketball programs who excels as an athlete and student.

She is an Honor Roll student with a 4.3 GPA and became a member of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society this year after having already earned membership into the Chinese National Honor Society in 2015.

Last year she was All-FCIAC Honorable Mention in soccer, this past winter she made the 2016-17 All-FCIAC Girls Basketball First Team, and during the 2015-16 girls basketball season she won the Coaches’ Award and was named MVP at the Woodstock Holiday Tournament.

Kim has already committed to playing soccer and basketball at Swarthmore College.

She was founder of DevelopMEnt Club, a networking club for peers, and has been a Student Council representative.

Josh Schaffer, Fairfield Ludlowe

Josh has achieved a 4.57 GPA and consistently made the Headmaster’s List while taking a heavy amount of AP courses.

The junior distance runner began his career last year and earned the Rookie Runner of the Year Award.

He’ll also be a member of the boys indoor track and field team for a second straight year.

Josh has volunteered for service organizations such as Scholars & Athletes Servicing Others, Role Model Mentors, and Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership.

Joshua Labkoff, Stamford

Josh is a two-sport varsity athlete (soccer and lacrosse) with a weighted GPA of 4.3 and is an active member of the Stamford High School leadership academy.

He is an after-school tutor for various subjects as well as an active member in his community.

Josh is also involved in the school’s Environmental Club and in the tutoring club which tutors fellow athletes.

Regan Keady, Darien

This four-year member of the girls swimming and diving team has achieved a weighted GPA of 3.91 while taking at least three Honors and AP courses since her freshman year and she is a member of the National Honor Society and French Honor Society.

Regan is a captain for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a gold and silver key winner in gthe Connecticut Scholastic Art Competition for her work in ceramics and has been featured in the O’Silas stART Gallery as well.

She is a Darien High School senior link leader, participates in the Support Our Soldiers club, and is a member of the school’s China Exchange Program.

Regan has been a state qualifier and state finalist in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke events.

She is an Emergency Medical Technician for the town and has volunteered in excess of 1,500 hours of community service riding on the ambulance. Regan is also the treasurer of Post 53, Darien EMS.

Madison Froelich, Brien McMahon

Madison has been with the field hockey program since her freshman year and is one of the captains this year.

She is a High Honor Roll student with a 3.8 GPA and a member of the National Honor Society.

Madison is also a member of The BeKind Club, she volunteers for several programs at United Church of Rowayton in addition to volunteering at the homeless shelter.

Natalie Silver, Ridgefield

This National Honor Society member has made Honor Roll every quarter to achieve a 4.175 unweighted GPA and is a recipient of the Wellesley College Book Award.

Natalie was selected to the FCIAC Field Hockey All-West Team and the CT Field Hockey Junior Select Game last year after having made FCIAC Honorable Mention in 2015.

Natalie is a Ridgefield Youth Field Hockey volunteer coach and has given a verbal commitment to play field hockey at Williams College.

Maddy Gordon, Brien McMahon

Maddy is a three-sport athlete – field hockey, wrestling and lacrosse – is was a captain this season in field hockey and a state champion wrestler in her girls 152 weight class as a junior last year.

The National Honor Society member has a 3.91 GPA , having received High Honors every quarter in high school, and takes five AP and one Honors class.

She twice was awarded Student of the Year for Individual Excellence in Chinese Language as well as being named “Student of the First Marking Period.” She was awarded the Barnard College Book Award during her junior year and has certification from the Beijing Language and Culture University for the College of Intewnsive Studies sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban.

Maddy is also an Executive Committee board member for CYL, a social activism program at McMahon, through which she does many things relating to community service.

Emily Grenier, Danbury

This High Honor Roll student with the 4.569 GPA was accepted into the National Honor Society and into Peer Leadership.

Emily is captain of the girls volleyball and girls basketball teams.

She is a recipient of the Vassar College Book Award, treasurer of her class, on the BOG executive council and a member of the Saint Joseph Church youth group.

Natalie Colon, Bridgeport Central (Fairchild Wheeler Magnet)

This senior with the 3.7 GPA while attending Fairchild Wheeler Magnet high school in Bridgeport is president of the National Honor Society.

Natalie has played goalkeeper and defender for Bridgeport Central’s girls soccer team and she also ran track as a sophomore.

She is currently enrolled UConn ECE courses, Sacred Heart college credit courses, and University of Bridgeport college credit courses.

Natalie volunteers every summer at her church’s Vacation Bible School program and is also a volunteer at The Jewish Home, Jewish Senior Services.

This past summer she was chosen to travel to England for two weeks as a part of a scholarship program for students with a record of high academic achievement. She also collaborated on a capstone project which was sent to the International Space Station as a part of an exploratory study this past summer.

Elizabeth Williamson, Greenwich

This versatile young lady is a multi-sport athlete, a talented musician and a High Honor Roll student with an unweighted GPA of 3.8.

Elizabeth is a team captain for the field hockey team, she’ll be a member of the girls basketball team this winter, she played lacrosse in the first two spring seasons of high school and as a junior she was on the girls outdoor track and field team.

She is in the National Honor Society, National Latin Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. She received the Silver Award for the National Latin Exam last year.

Elizabeth plays the French Horn in the Wind Ensemble and the pep band and was selected for the Western Regional Band last year. She also plays piano.

She also volunteers at the Greenwich the Greenwich Music and Arts Camp in the summer, at Greenwich Hospital, she coaches youth field hockey and a middle school girls’ basketball team, and is a youth lacrosse referee.

Madeleine Pagliaro, Wilton

Maddy is a member of the National Honor Society, has a 3.75 GPA and has been an Honor Roll student every marking period.

The four-year member of the varsity field hockey team has experienced being on a state championship team last year and the FCIAC championship team in 2016 when she was also named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic Squad.

Maddy is a Eucharistic minister and volunteer at Our Lady of Fatima, a Mac-Trec Youth retreat member, volunteer for Fight Hunger Now, and Girl Scout.

She has verbally committed to attend and play field hockey at Gettysburg College.

Savannah Buzzeo, Brien McMahon

Savannah is a High Honor Roll student with a 4.3 GPA while taking many AP and Honors classes and the recipient of the Columbia Junior Book Award.

She has been accepted into the National Honor Society while continuing her participation in Best Buddies and RANSACK, a tutoring program guided toward helping fellow students at BMHS.

Savannah was a member of the girls cross country team this fall, was co-captain for both the indoor and outdoor track and field teams last year as a junior and was recently reinstated to again serve as a team captain for the upcoming indoor season.

Currently McMahon’s school record holder in the javelin, last spring Savannah placed third in the FCIAC Championships and was runner-up at the CIAC State Class LL Championships with her javelin throw of 107 feet, one inch to help the Senators place seventh out of the 21 teams who scored points.

Savannah plans on continuing her education and track and field career at Lehigh University next year.

Anna Landler, Ridgefield

Anna has been a consistent High Honor Roll student while taking mostly AP and Honors classes to escalate her unweighted GPA to 4.36. She is secretary of her chapter of the National Honor Society.

She is a senior co-captain of the girls soccer team which has won two FCIAC championships and placed second in the state Class LL tournament twice.

Also a superb track and field athlete, Anna holds school records in the long jump and as a member of the 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams, and has earned All-FCIAC, All-State and All-New England designations.

She plays the trumpet and is section leader in concert band. Her other activities include club soccer with Yankee United, assistant coaching for track, soccer and the Holland League, and working as a soccer referee.

Emma Jacobson, Ridgefield

This senior is a member of the National Honor Society and has made the High Honor/Honor Roll for 12 consecutive quarters while managing a challenging course load of AP and Honors classes that has culminated in a 4.4 GPA.

Emma is a co-captain and starting midfielder of the girls soccer team, of which she has been a member of all four years.

She has been a volunteer soccer coach for the Soccer Club of Ridgefield for the past three years, a volunteer for the Holland Division of the Soccer Club of Ridgefield, a Girl Scout member for the past 10 years and is also a SafeRides of Ridgefield volunteer.

Nicole Alindogan, Ridgefield

Nicole has a weighted GPA of 4.26 while taking all AP and Honors classes throughout high school, and she has been accepted to the National Honor Society. She spent her summer at the Yale Scool of Medicine completing research on reproductive cancer.

Nicole has been on the varsity cheerleading team since her junior year, participating in both spirit and competitive seasons as a base, and was awarded with the MVP Award for the competitive season last year.

She is co-president of the Future Business Leaders of America Club, organizes food/supply drives to the less fortunate, teaches English to a Syrian refugee family, and also volunteers to several more clubs and community organizations.

Sheena Zhou, Darien

This senior member of the girls swimming and diving team has registered a 4.01 GPA while taking predominantly AP, Honors and Accelerated courses.

Sheena is Co-Editor of the Yearbook Club which produces the school’s yearbook, and Co-President of the school’s Asian Culture Club which introduces Asian culture through food, music, arts and other activities.

She is an Advisory Link Leader on a team that helps freshmen transition into high school as she and the other leaders give freshmen advice and strive to be positive role models.

Sheena is a Christian Worship Team Leader in the Fairfield County Chinese Community Church and a vacation bible school camp counselor.

Alexander Kosyakov, Greenwich

This strong junior distance runner made the All-FCIAC Boys Cross Country Second Team by placing 26th at the conference championship meet in October. He was named team MVP last year as a sophomore, two years ago was Freshman of the Year for the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field teams, and he also ran a strong leg to help the 4×800-meter relay team place fifth at the 2017 FCIAC Boys Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Alexander has a cumulative 4.3 GPA while taking mostly Honors and AP classes and he is currently the Junior Class President after having served as Sophomore Class President last year.

He was a Silver medalist at the 2017 GeniusOlympiad Science Fair and second-place winner at the Norwalk Community College Science Fair, a Silver medal winner in the 2016 Scholastic Art and Writing contest, and a recipient of the Acorda Scientific Excellence Award in 2017.

Alexander also received the Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award for over 100 hours of volunteering in 2016.

Jonathan Gomes, Bridgeport Central

Jonathan transferred into Bridgeport Central from Brazil with limited English language understanding when he was a sophomore and despite that he has achieved a 3.4 GPA.

He was named captain of the boys soccer team after exhibiting leadership qualities and a work ethic and was selected to the 2015 All-FCIAC Boys Soccer First Team during that sophomore year.

Jonathan played for Beachside Academy during his junior year. He returned to Central for this senior year, resumed his role as captain and again was selected to the All-FCIAC First Team.

He has committed to Fairfield University and is excited to play at the higher level.

Christine Fiore, Darien

This National Honor Society member with the 3.7 GPA has been a four-year varsity player and is senior captain of the girls soccer, girls basketball and girls lacrosse teams.

Christine has been selected to the All-FCIAC First Team and All-State Team in lacrosse, the All-FCIAC Girls Soccer First Team and the All-FCIAC Girls Basketball Second Team.

She is the president and co-founder of the Darien chapter of the OneLove Foundation.

She will attend the United States Naval Academy next year and play lacrosse there.

Alex Dehmel, Darien

Alex has a 4.022 GPA and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, a math honors Society.

He has been a member of the football team, boys swimming and diving team, and boys outdoor track and field team all four years and is a captain of the swimming and diving team.

He has volunteered for the YMCA special needs programs, is involved with the Darien Youth Asset Team, and he also participates in Best Buddies and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Grace Vocalina, St. Joseph

This four-year member of the volleyball program has a 92.13 average while taking College Prep and Honors courses and has been accepted into the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.

Grace is a member of the Raising Awareness Against Abuse For Teens (RAAAFT) Club and has volunteered with the 21st Century After School Program, Boys and Girls Club, Smart Buddies, and Connecticut Food Bank.

Ryan Haack, St. Joseph

Ryan takes mostly AP and Honors courses, has a 98.34 average, is a President’s Honor Roll student and a member of the National Honor Society, as well as National Honor societies for Math, English, Art and Spanish.

This recipient of the Dartmouth College Book Award volunteers as a Writing Center tutor and Student Ambassador at St. Joseph’s and also for the Special Olympics.

Ryan was co-captain of the cross country team during this past senior season and co-captain of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams as both a junior and senior.

Emily Proulx, Fairfield Ludlowe

Emily has a 4.57 weighted GPA, having made Headmaster’s List every semester, and is a member of the National Honor Society along with National Honor societies for Math, Science, History and Spanish.

She has been with the girls cross country program all four years and has run for the varsity team the last three, serving as a co-captain this senior year. She also runs for the girls’ outdoor track and field team.

Emily volunteers at the library and is one of the Key Club officers.

Taylor Morton, Brien McMahon

This senior is the total package as far as having leadership skills, having excelled as a student and an athlete and having volunteered at her church and in her community.

Taylor has started for the girls varsity volleyball team since she was a freshman, been a team captain the last two years, has registered over 1,000 kills for her career and was selected to the 2017 All-FCIAC Girls Volleyball First Team after having made All-FCIAC Third Team last year.

She is also a two-time captain of both the indoor and outdoor track and field programs, has earned All-FCIAC honors in that sport and competed at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

Taylor has taught young girls how to play volleyball while volunteering as a counselor at a volleyball camp, she has volunteered as a counselor at Bible Camp for her church and is a member of the Center for Youth Leadership club.

Tes DeJaeger, Brien McMahon

Tes has achieved a weighted GPA of 4.5 while taking mostly Honors and AP classes and has been accepted into the National Honor Society.

She has been a co-captain of the varsity volleyball and tennis teams since her junior year. She made All-FCIAC Second Team in volleyball last year as a junior, All-FCIAC Third Team this year, and was All-FCIAC Honorable Mention in tennis as a junior.

Tes is the President of the B Kind Club which has donated a significant amount to Hurricane Harvey relief, has sent letters to the troops overseas and collected toiletries to give to the homeless shelter during Thanksgiving.

She has participated in the Drama Department for three years and was a lead for two of the shows. She is also a member of the most prestigious choir group at school.

Tes has been accepted into the Center for Global Studies (CGS) and has travelled to Japan and India with the school. Through the CGS she has taken honors Japanese for the past four years and has been selected to be an ambassador mentor for CGS.

She has volunteered for eight years to teach tennis and tutor undeprivileged children in Norwalk who reside in subsidized housing.

Anna Gawley, Danbury

Anna has a weighted 4.17 GPA while taking many AP and Honors level courses.

She is an AP Scholar in recognition of her outstanding scores in AP tests and was a Silver Medal recipient in the National Latin Exam as a sophomore.

Anna was selected for membership in both the National Art Honor Society and National Honor Society. As a sophomore, she was accepted into the Witherspoon Institute’s Philosophy Summer Program at Princeton University for aspiring Women Philosophers.

This creative young lady is also a very good musician and artist. Anna is a strong pianist with training in the vocal traditions of Gregorian chant and polyphony. As a fine artist, Anna has a portfolio of varied work and has taken part in numerous Art competitions. She has been involved in the National Art Honor Society program at Danbury High School.

The eldest of six children, Anna created a community-oriented poetry club which focuses on the classical works of English poetry and her participation in the school’s “WordFest” and recitation of her original poems.

Kerry Blatney, Darien

Kerry is in the top five percent of her senior class with a 4.32 GPA while taking all Honors and AP classes and is the Darien High School chapter president of the National Honor Society.

She helped the field hockey team win the FCIAC championship this fall, will be captain of the girls indoor track and field team and she also is a distance runner for the outdoor track team.

Kerry has qualified for conference and state championship meets in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races and was a member of the strong 4×800 relay team which advanced to the State Open.

This senior captain of the girls cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field programs has a 3.963 cumulative GPA and has made High Honor Roll every quarter since her freshman year.

She was admitted into the National Honor Society and French Honor Society and is also a member of the Wee The People: History Club and Key Club.

Elizabeth also volunteers for the school’s American Cancer Society Club and through that helps raise funds for Relay for Life.

Brooklyn Cenatiempo, Trumbull

This senior with the cumulative 3.85 GPA has been inducted into the National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society (historian), and Italian Honor Society.

She has played botgh field hockey and lacrosse all four years and was a captain for the field hockey team this past season.

Brooklyn partakes in the school musical, Honors Chamber Choir, and Girls Scouts along with multiple community service projects such as singing for the elderly, weeding gardens, and working in soup kitchens.

She is also the president of the Hungry Kidzz community service organization which collects and supplies food for children in need.

Cameron Berg, Wilton

Cameron, who has been left midfielder the last two years in soccer, has taken all AP/Honors classes and been a High Honor Roll student.

Cameron is president of the Wilton High School student body, president of the school band, co-captain of Wilton Debate, vice president of Wilton Model Congress and a recipient of the Harvard Book Award.

Zoe Lash, Wilton

Zoe is a senior who has achieved an unweighted GPA of 3.67 as an Honor Roll and High Honor Roll student while taking numerous AP and Honors classes.

She was accepted into the French Honor Society her freshman year and the National Honor Society her junior years.

Zoe is a four-year varsity letter winners for the girls soccer and girls lacrosse teams. She earned All-FCIAC honors last spring in lacrosse.

She volunteers for TopSoccer, DIG One for One Soccer Program, Harlem Girls Lacrosse Leadership Program, Safe Rides, and Wilton Youth Soccer and Lacrosse.

This consistent Honor Roll and High Honor Roll student has a 3.688 GPA and currently has A grades in the challenging Nonfiction Writing, American Law and Legal System, AP Spanish and Calculus 2 courses and a B-plus grade in AP Environmental Science.

Sommer is captain as a senior of the volleyball team and also has run for the track and field team.

Three times a year Sommer delivers gifts to children with cancer and also helps organize fundraisers for the American Cancer Society Club.

Scott Peters, Darien

Scott has a scored 1,500 out of 1,600 overall on the SAT (770/800 Math, 740/800 Reading & Writing) and has a 3.56 GPA.

He has volunteered for the Darien Fire Department, Child Care in Fairfield County, Stamford Hospital and as a junior counselor at William Lawrence Camp.

Scott is a member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field teams, he is an Honors Orchestra Cellist, a member of Tri M, Music Honor Society and a DECA club member from 2015-17.

Robert Lanni, Greenwich

This National Honor Society member has a 3.35 unweighted GPA while taking Honors and AP courses.

Robert is co-captain of Greenwich’s excellent football team and he plays for the baseball team in the spring.

He volunteers at Special Olympics Greenwich, the Pacific House (men’s homeless shelter), and the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich.

Robert was also invited to the FCIAC Leadership Conference which took place at Staples High School.

Sailor Jiranek, Greenwich

Danielle Nichols, Bridgeport Central

This senior captain of both the cheerleading and softball teams has a 3.34 GPA while taking mostly AP and Honor classes.

Danielle plans on continuing her cheerleading and softball career as a student-athlete in college.

She has volunteered for several events and organizations, including Relay for Life, children’s clinics for cheerleading and softball, the color run and breast cancer walks.

Catarina Silva, Danbury

This High Honor Roll student maintains a 3.9 GPA while taking AP and Honors classes.

Catarina has been a varsity girls soccer player for three years and swam for the boys varsity team during her freshman year.

She is a member of several clubs, including DECA, BOG, Executive Council, and was inducted into the National Business Honor Society.

Catarina is a member of the Youth Volunteer Corps of Western CT (YVC), serving at soup kitchens, cleaning up parks and homes, wrapping toys, building shelters, etc. She was a three-time recipient of the Presidential Award for her service and was a recipient of the CABE Leadership Award.

Justin Lowenbein, Norwalk

This member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society has a 4.2 cumulative GPA while taking multiple AP and Honors classes.

Justin was a solid defender for Norwalk’s boys soccer team who had a key role in helping the Bears advance to the semifinals in conference and state tournaments.

He received the St. Lawrence University Book Award for Community Service. Justin volunteers at soccer clinics for younger players and he is also a volunteer for Unified Sports.

Emily Neuner, Darien

Emily is a National Merit Common Scholar and a recipient of the Smith College Book Award.

She has been a member of Darien’s perennially-strong field hockey program all four years and she helped the Blue Wave win the FCIAC championship this year. Emily is a four-year member of the girls tennis team as a No. 4 singles player, she has won FCIAC and state championships with that program and is a senior captain.

Emily volunteers as a tutor at Norwalk Grassroots Tennis and Education, the Bruce Museum and Seaside Center, and she is a Senior Advisory Link Leader.

Louisa Bjerke, Greenwich

Louisa, who was inducted into the National Honor Society this fall, has a 4.55 cumulative GPA.

She has been an Honor Roll student every year in her first three years and was previously inducted into the National Math Honors Society (Mu Alpha Theta) and National Junior Classical League, an organization in which she currently serves as vice president.

Louisa has been a pianist since seventh grade and a member of the American College of Musicians National Piano Guild since 2001. She has been a member of the Greenwich High School Piano Club the last two years and donates her time and talent to playing piano for various community elderly care homes.

She was an all-state athlete as a member of the powerful Greenwich girls swimming and diving team. As a member of the school’s varsity sailing club, Louisa received the Top Prospect Award in 2015 and added to that with the Outstanding Crew Award in 2016 and ’17.

Alex Urbahn, New Canaan

This senior has taken 10 AP courses, been on the High Honor Roll every quarter of high school, and has received the AP Scholar with Distinction award and the Brown Book Award for excellence in written and verbal communication.

Alex is a team captain of the cross country and indoor track and field programs and he made the All-FCIAC Cross Country Second Team in 2016 and ’17. Alex has been a member of both programs all four years.

Alex is co-founder, director and treasher of the New Canaan Bee Foundation (a nonprofit to save honeybees), treasurer of the National Honor Society, founder of the Stock Club and a volunteer at Waveny Care Center.

Tejas Kulkarni, Trumbull

This High Honor Roll student with the 4.0 GPA while taking all AP and Honors classes is a member of the National Math Honor Society.

Tejas has been a three-season runner for the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field teams with plans on being a team member all four years and is also a participant in DECA, BEI and Academic Decathlon.

Jalen Edmonds, Bridgeport Central

Jalen has been inducted into the National Honors Society, he is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, and was selected to participate as a member of the Guided Pathway Support Program, a national college preparatory and leadership development program for African-American students.

He has maintained a 3.9 GPA in the Aerospace School of Fairchild Wheeler High School, where he has a rigorous course load of ECE and engineering-focused classes.

Jalen was the starting left offensive tackle and defensive tackle for the football team and as the self-proclaimed Chaplain he prayed for and with the team before each game. He has also participated in weightlifting and for the boys track and field program throughout his high school career.

Jalen has also given much time to several community organizations and clubs. I Heart New Haven Community Outreaches, NHS Community Service, Christian Fellowship at school are among them. Jalen has also been the teen basketball small group leader at church.

He went on a mission trip to New York City to volunteer at soup kitchens, hand out clothes to the needy, clean parks and homeless shelters, help run a bible camp for youngsters, visit the elderly, talk to the lonely and pray hope to the homeless in Harlem.

Erika Linke, Ridgefield

This senior High Honor Roll student has achieved a weighted GPA of 4.263 while taking all Honors or AP classes such as AP Psychology, AP United States History, AP Government and Politics and she currently takes a UConn English Level Course.

Erika is a member of the National Honor Society, Role Model Mentors, RHS Helping Hands and RHS Key Club, and she earned Academic Recognition in German for the 2015-15 and 2015-16 school years.

She is team captain of the girls soccer team, she played a vital role to help the Tigers win the state Class LL championship this year after they won FCIAC championships in 2015 and ’16. She received the Tiger Pride Award as a freshman and more recently as a senior.

Erika is also a member of the girls indoor track and field, and girls lacrosse teams.

Vishva Patel, Norwalk

Vishva, who has made High Honor Roll throughout high school, is ranked fifth in his class with a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.44 and he has an unweighted GPA of 3.9 while taking all AP and Honors classes throughout high school.

He is a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society and is secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America Club.

Vishva has been a four-year member of both the cross country and and boys indoor track and field teams, a three-year member of the boys outdoor track and field team, and he is a senior captain for all three programs. He was the cross country team MVP in 2016 and ’17 and was also on 4×800 relay teams which set school records indoor and outdoors.

Vishva is a Link Crew leader at NHS (a mentoring program for freshman entering high school). He is a lifeguard at Chelsea Piers in Stamford and he also volunteers at The Open Door Shelter and the Carver Center in Norwalk.

Maressa Tumminia, Danbury

This senior member of the soccer and track teams has been a High Honor Roll student throughout all four years of high school and currently has a 3.96 GPA for her senior year.

Maressa volunteers in the tutoring center every week to assist fellow students in their academics. She works at the Danbury Sports Dome and engages the youth in fun and competitive events.

James Dubreuil, Trumbull

This junior member of the Math Honor Society is a High Honor Roll student with a 4.137 GPA while taking all AP and Honors courses.

James runs for the boys cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field teams and earned selection on the 2017 All-FCIAC Boys Cross Country Second Team.

He was Honorable Mention for Best Delegate in Model Congress and Honorable Mention in the National French Exam.

James is a Link Crew Leader, he tutors middle school children in math, volunteers each year at a Cub Scouts summer camp in Trumbull, and he is currently working on his Eagle Scout project.

Colin Baker, Norwalk

This member is a senior co-captain of Norwalk’s boys cross country and track teams and he is now serving as his class president for the third straight year.

Colin has a 3.75 unweighted GPA and a weighted GPA of 4.25. He is a National Honor Society member and an AP Scholar with Honor.

He was also one of four runners on the 4×800 relay team which set a school record.

Colin is a founder of two clubs and he works as a lifeguard at Chelsea Piers in Stamford.

Jenna Smeriglio, Norwalk

This versatile athlete is a High Honor Roll student who has achieved a 4.081 GPA while taking mostly AP and Honors classes.

Jenna is a National Honor Society member and a recipient of the University of Michigan Book Award.

She was a four-year varsity starter and senior captain of Norwalk’s girls soccer team. She is an excellent gymnast who has competed in regional and national meets as a member of the Wilton YMCA team, and she also works as a junior figure skating coach for the Town of Westport.

Jenna volunteers at Person 2 Person (food pantry), she helps at West Rocks Middle School events and as a sophomore she was a participant in the 30-hour famine.

Katie Pieterse, Ridgefield

This excellent student-athlete is a three-year starter for the field hockey program, she made All-FCIAC and All-State Second Team as a junior and has committed to Yale University for field hockey.

Katie achieved High Honors during her freshman and sophomore years and has a 4.286 GPA.

She made the FCIAC All-West Field Hockey Team, as a sophomore played lacrosse as a freshman and switched to outdoor track and field for her spring sport as a sophomore.

Katie also volunteers for many organizations. She is a Role Model Mentor, a youth field hockey referee, and she volunteers for the Family and Children’s Agency, National Charity League and as a coach for Ridgefield Youth Field Hockey.

Kathryn Barlow, Ridgefield

Kathryn is an Honor Roll/High Honor Roll student with a Q1 2017 GPA of 4.083.

She had one of the most accomplished careers as a four-year starter for the girls soccer team which won FCIAC championships during her sophomore and junior years and as a senior captain she helped the Tigers capture their first-ever state Class LL championship. This fall Kathryn made the All-State Class LL First Team and All-FCIAC Girls Soccer First Team. Last year she made All-FCIAC Honorable Mention.

Kathryn is also a member of Safe Rides, Key Club and has taught soccer to younger players. She has held a variety of posts during her six years as a member of the National Charity League.

She plans to head south to attend college.

FCIAC Exemplary Scholar-Athletes, January, 2018

The FCIAC has begun a new Exemplary Scholar Athlete of the Month award. Each school will recognize two senior student athletes per season who have both high academic standing and demonstrate leadership qualities.

Each school will still have the opportunity to recognize a seasonal scholar athlete for each sport at the end of the season.

Luke Bender – Fairfield Warde – Wrestling

Luke, who is on track to being his class valedictorian, has earned his varsity letter all four years and has twice made All-FCIAC Honorable Mention.

He received the University of Rochester Xerox Award for innovation during his junior year and was recipient of the Latin Excellence Award during his sophomore and junior years.

Luke is president of the Latin and Investment Club and he volunteers at a center for people with autism.

Meaghan Lavelle – Westhill – Basketball

Meaghan has a weighted GPA of 4.85 while taking mostly AP and Honors courses throughout her four-year high school career and she will graduate among the top five percent of her class this June.

She is a four-year member of Westhill’s girls basketball program and a senior team captain this year.

Meaghan is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, she is an AP Scholar with Honor and a recipient of the Holy Cross Junior Book Award.

She has participated in Mission Trips to Appalachia and is a volunteer youth basketball coach with the Stamford Youngtimers.

Brian Dineen – St. Joseph – Basketball

This senior captain and four-year member of both the boys basketball and cross country teams has registered a 3.9 GPA while taking AP and Honors Classes and made the President’s Honor Roll.

Brian also volunteers much time to several community organizations. He has received the President’s Award for service for giving about 200 service hours per year as Coordinator of Food and Needs Drives at Blessed Sacrament in Bridgeport.

Molly Murray – Trinity Catholic – Basketball

Molly, who was among the youngsters featured in Stamford Magazine in its Top Teens to Watch article, is a National Honor Society member with an unweighted GPA of 3.52.

She has been a four-year member and a senior team captain for both the girls volleyball and girls basketball programs and last year as a junior she made All-FCIAC Honorable Mention in girls basketball.

Molly has received the Cornell Book Award, Mary Kay Smith Award and was a finalist for the prestigious Mickey Lione Jr. Scholarship.

This future student at the College of Holy Cross has also been a member of the Ambassadors Club and Business Club and a participant in the Stock Market Challenge.

Alyssa Kraus – Fairfield Ludlowe – Indoor Track

This versatile senior three-sport athlete with the 4.0 GPA while taking mostly AP and Honors Classes is a member of the National Honor Society, Math National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society.

Alyssa has excelled as a member of the field hockey team in the fall, the girls indoor track and field team in the winter and outdoor track team in the spring, having served as a senior co-captain for both the field hockey and indoor track teams.

She made the FCIAC All-East Field Hockey Team this past fall after been FCIAC Honorable during her sophomore and junior years. This winter she made All-FCIAC with her runner-up finish in the 1,000-meter run and that was her first all-conference honor as an individual after having been All-FCIAC as one of the four members of relay teams in previous last year (Sprint Medley indoors, 4×400 and 4×800 outdoors).

Emily Grenier – Danbury – Girls Basketball

This High Honor Roll student-athlete with a 4.591 GPA is ranked ninth out of the 627 students in the Danbury High School Class of 2018.

Emily is also treasurer of her class.

She is a four-year basketball player, she received the DHS Student-Athlete Award for the 2017 volleyball season, and has been a senior team captain for both the girls volleyball and girls basketball teams.

Emily was accepted to the National Honor Society and into Peer Leadership, she’s a recipient of the Vassar College Book Award, and a member of the BOG executive council and Saint Joseph Church youth group.

Sarah Helms – Brien McMahon – Girls Indoor Track

Sarah is a versatile three-sport athlete with a cumulative GPA of 3.89 by having made High Honors all four years.

She played for the varsity girls soccer team all four years, is on the girls indoor track and field team this winter, and this coming spring she will be a senior co-captain in her third year with the girls tennis team.

Sarah received the “Student of the Marking Period” Principal’s Award for the fourth marking period of 2017. And she is Co-President of the Bkind Club.

Jessica Lipinski – Trumbull – Girls Basketball

This senior has had significant success in the classroom and as a three-sport athlete.

She is a High Honor Roll student with a lofty 4.69 GPA while taking mostly AP and Honors classes.

Jessica is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta (Mathematics Honor Society), and a recipient of the George Eastman Young Leaders Award.

Jessica was captain of the field hockey team this past fall. She is a member of the girls basketball team, including last year when Trumbull won the FCIAC championship and was runner-up in the state Class LL tournament. She is also a member of the girls outdoor track and field team during the spring season.

She is a member of the Student Council, DECA Club, Model UN and Peer Mediation.

Jessica also volunteers for several community organizations such as TOPSoccer, the Trumbull Youth Field Hockey Camp, and Trumbull Youth Girls Basketball camps and clinics.

She tutors high school and middle school students and works at the AYSO Snack Booth for the Trumbull High School Booster Club.

Brooke Kelly – Stamford – Girls Basketball

This young lady who attends the Academy of Information Technology and Engineering is the total package in that she she has excelled in the classroom and on the playing courts, is a natural team leader with and has given back to her community through several volunteer organizations.

Brooke is a National Honor Society member with a weighted GPA of 4.0 after having completed demanding courses such as AP English and Composition, AP U.S. History and AP Human Geography, and she has scored 1,400 on the SAT.

She is currently in the University of Connecticut ECE programs and taking courses such as Writing Through Literature, Spanish, and Government & Politics.

When Brooke was a sophomore she was a member of the Stamford High girls basketball team which won the state Class LL championship. Last year she made the 2016-17 All-FCIAC Girls Basketball Second Team as a junior and she is currently a senior team captain. Brooke was also the starting setter for the girls volleyball team.

Brooke received the Certificate of Excellence from the Stamford Public Education Foundation for helping “at risk” sixth- and seventh-grade students in the Rippowam Mentoring Program keep their grades up, improve their organization skills and stay out of trouble. She was also head coach of the fourth-through-sixth grade basketball team.

Andrew Darby – Darien – Boys Basketball

Andrew is a senior co-captain of both the boys basketball and perennially-strong boys lacrosse team and has registered a 3.697 GPA while taking demanding classes such as AP Statistics, AP Calculus, Honors Physics and Honors Chemistry.

He has been a key contributor toward Darien’s boys lacrosse teams winning FCIAC and state championships in 2016 and ’17 and he plans on playing lacrosse at the University of Michigan.

Andrew is a member of Safe Rides and he also volunteers for the Darien Youth Lacrosse Program and Feed My Starving Children program.

Jake Sloane – New Canaan – Boys Basketball

This senior leader has made either Honors or High Honors all four years of high school.

Jake is a four-year member of both the boys basketball and boys track and field teams and has been a team captain all four years for either the freshman, junior varsity or varsity boys basketball teams.

He has also been a member of the Service League of Boys throughout high school and is Liaison for Sports Buddies, an organization which promotes athletic participation for mentally challenged children.

Chris Colbert – Wilton – Boys Indoor Track

Chris has consistently taken rigorous Advanced Placement and Honors classes and become a High Honor Roll student with an unweighted GPA of 3.9.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. He received the Wilton Land Trust Conservation Book Award as a junior.

Chris, who has been captain of both the indoor and outdoor teams since his junior years, owns school records in the 300-meter run (35.36, indoors) and 400 (48.71, outdoors) and has earned All-FCIAC, All-State and All-New England honors. He has also competed at the New Balance Nationals. Last year he received the Leadership Award for the indoor and outdoor seasons.

He is also a member of the CT Elite Track & Field Club team and a participant and volunteer for several organizations. Chris has been a leader at YMCA Camp Belknap in New Hampshire. He also coaches Recreational Youth Basketball, is a certified lifeguard with training in CPR, First-Aid, and AED.

Chris will bring his smarts, speed and leadership attributes to Yale University this coming fall and be a sprinter for the men’s track and field program.

Jennie Piotrzkowski – Greenwich – Girls Ice Hockey

This High Honor Roll student was accepted into the National Honor Society and Chinese Honor Society this year.

Jennie – a member of the field hockey, girls ice hockey and girls lacrosse teams – captained the ice hockey team in her junior and senior years and she earned All-FCIAC and All-State kudos as a sophomore and junior.

She is a member of the Steering Committee for Greenwich High School’s Names Team, secretary of SPIE (Students Partnering in Education) and treasurer for the China Club.

Jennie is extremely gratified about the valuable lessons and lifelong friendships she has gotten out of her experiences volunteering with Storm special hockey and coaching for Stamford Youth Lacrosse.

Katrell Clay – Norwalk – Boys Indoor Track

Katrell will soon receive his high school graduation diploma and an associate’s degree in software engineering as he is a student at both Norwalk High School and Norwalk Community College as a participant in the NECA (Norwalk Early College Academy) program.

On the track he happens to be one of the best hurdlers in New England. Katrell won the state Class LL 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.48 last spring in the CIAC Class LL Boys Outdoor Track and Field Championships and more recently he added FCIAC and state Class LL individual titles indoors this winter in the 55-meter hurdles, clocking an 8.04 while winning his Class LL race. Katrell also won the 300-meter dash this winter at the FCIAC Eastern Division Championships to begin a championship meets season in which he triple-medaled in the divisional, conference and state championship meets.

This National Honor Society member is currently an intern at IBM and a member of the Norwalk High School Robotics Team and STEM Travelers Club.

Katrell has been a recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award for community service (2017-18), the Frederick Douglass Award (2016-17), NECA Scholar of the Year Award, and Housemaster Award (2015-16) and he helps raise funds for his school’s cooking program.

Katrell plans on continuing his student-athlete career as a hurdler/sprinter in college and has thus far applied to Brown, UConn, Wesleyan, Georgia State, Georgetown, George Washington and several more.

Alex Price – Ridgefield – Boys Basketball

Alex has been a key contributor – including when he drained four three-pointers in the fourth quarter and overtime against Trinity Catholic – to help Ridgefield have a very good season and get in position to secure very high seeds in the FCIAC and state tournaments.

He is a three-year member of the varsity boys basketball team and also an excellent baseball player who earned All-FCIAC and All-State First Team selections and was team MVP while helping lead the Tigers to the FCIAC championship last spring.

Alex also excels in the classroom. He has a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.97 (4.3 weighted) and has been a High Honor Roll/Honor Roll student every quarter of his high school career.

He and his baseball teammates volunteer for the Best Buddies program and they teach youngsters with disabilities the game of baseball.

Alex plans on majoring in Environmental Science and playing baseball next year at Middlebury College.

Khadijat Amoo – Bridgeport Central – Girls Basketball

This Fairchild Wheeler senior is a true leader as she is captain of Central’s girls basketball team, president of her National Society of Black Engineers Chapter, founder and president of her Society of Women Engineers Club, vice president of her National Honor Society Chapter, and co-captain of her cross country and track and field teams.

Khadijat has accumulated about 270 hours of community service and still maintained her 4.15 GPA throughout her high school career.

She has also worked on the U.S. Military Blackhawk as an aircraft mechanic at Sikorsky Aircraft.

Khadijat has so far been awarded an $80,000 scholarship to Georgia Institute of Technology to study Chemical Engineering and she has also been accepted into the University of Virginia and University of Maryland.

Will Landowne – Staples – Boys Indoor Track

Will has an unweighted GPA of 3.5 while taking AP and Honors classes almost entirely throughout high school and during this senior year he has an unweighted GPA of 3.8.

Will is team captain of the boys cross country, indoor and outdoor tracks during all three sports seasons. And during all four fall seasons Will has been an excellent distance runner who has helped lead the cross country team to four state Class LL championships and a State Open team crown.

More recently Will scored 20 of his team’s 37 points when he was a double individual champion (1,000-meter run and 1,600) who led Staples to second place at the CIAC Class LL state championship meet and that was merely the latest of so many victories and achievements at conference and state championship meets.

Will has many All-FCIAC, All-State and All-New England awards and has competed at indoor track and cross country national meets.

Catherine Allison, Fairfield Warde

This Honor Roll student with a 4.0 GPA has received an AFROTC Scholarship and plans on majoring in Russian Studies at the University of Pittsburgh.

Catherine has been a member of the National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society during her junior and senior years and as a senior she became a member of the National Latin Honor Society.

She stepped in the middle of the season to become a co-captain of the girls basketball team for the second half of the season after the team lost one of its captains to injury.

Catherine has volunteered as a tutor in middle school art classrooms and by painting murals for school.

Katherine Schoenherr, Ridgefield

Katherine has been a High Honor Roll student throughout her high school career as she has an unweighted GPA of 4.166 and an overall weighted GPA of 4.438.

She is a National Honor Society member who has received multiple academic recognition awards. She received the Regis College Book Award.

Katherine played soccer for nine years before she became a member of the varsity cheerleading team as a junior.

This violinist has been a principal in the RHS Symphonic Orchestra for three years.

Katherine is the president of Ridgefield High School’s Robin Hood Club and is a volunteer for Safe Rides of Ridgefield.

She will attend the University of Delaware as a nursing major.

Kylie Martin, Darien

Kylie is a full member of the Math National Honor Society and Chinese National Honor Society and has achieved a 3.65 GPA.

She has taken mostly AP and Honors classes and is a High Honor Roll student.

Kylie was on the field hockey team as a freshman, cross country team as a sophomore and junior, ski team all four years, and tennis team as a junior. She raced in the state skiing final race all four years.

Kylie has volunteered for Feed My Starving Children, St. Luke’s Church and William Syndrome Association.

She is founder and president of the Refugee Support Club, a Senior Link Leader, and a member of the Garden Club, DAWG Club and DHS Tutoring Club.

Mary Fitton, Staples

This senior captain of the gymnastics team has compiled a 3.93 GPA as a High Honors student throughout high school.

Mary was a very good high school all-around gymnast who made the All-FCIAC Girls Gymnastics Second Team during her freshman, junior and senior seasons. She also received the Coaches Award as a freshman and junior.

She has volunteered many hours with the National Charity League Chapter in Westport since her freshman year. During her freshman, sophomore and junior years she received the Grade Level Service Award, which recognizes the girls in each grade with the highest number of philanthropy hours.

Mary will attend Boston College.

Sean Walters, Brien McMahon

Sean has been a High Honor Roll student and achieved a 3.96 GPA while taking College, AP and Honors level courses.

This senior has been a four-year member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams.

He is President of the Peer Mentor Program at McMahon and the senior is also a member of the Marching Band, Honors Wind Symphony and Jazz Band.

Sean is a certified lifeguard at the New Canaan YMCA. He is an Eagle Scout, has volunteered for many community organizations and plans on continuing to volunteer while he is in college, where he plans to study Biomedical Engineering.

Lauryn Menzie, Danbury

This senior captain of the varsity cheerleading team has a 4.077 GPA by having made High Honor Roll every semester since her freshman year.

Lauryn also excelled as a cheerleader as she was an All-FCIAC cheerleader in 2015, ’17 and ’18, which was every year she was a member of the team, and she was All-State this year. She was also a member of the strong girls track and field program as a freshman and sophomore.

She is involved in several extracurricular activities, volunteers much time to community organizations and participates in events to raise charitable funds. Lauryn is a member of Danbury High School’s BOG Executive Council, she was accepted into Peer Leadership (Selective leadership program at DHS), she volunteered to help coach the HCYS middle and elementary school cheerleading teams, and she participated in Safe Walk and a Walk to End Alzeimers.

Lauryn will attend Eastern Connecticut State University.

Covadonga Perez Pelaez, Wilton

Covadonga, treasurer of the National Honor Society, has made Honor Roll throughout her high school career as she has a 3.8 GPA.

She made the 2018 All-FCIAC Girls Indoor Track and Field First Team when she was runner-up in the shot put with her throw of 32 feet, 11½ inches and she holds the indoor school record of 33-11.

Covadonga has been captain of both the indoor and outdoor track as a junior and senior and was a four-year member of the girls soccer program, including the last two as a member of the varsity team.

She is vice president of the History Club and secretary of UNICEF Club, a member of Wilton Safe Rides and the American Cancer Society Club, and a volunteer for TOP Soccer in Wilton.

Ben Mellor, Fairfield Ludlowe

All of Ben’s classes have been either Honors or AP, including AP courses such as Statistics and Physics, he made the Headmaster’s List in 10 of the first 13 marking periods and Honor Roll in three of the first 13 marking periods, and he has a 4.15 GPA.

Ben is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and a recipient of the Rochester Institute of Technology Book Award.

He has been a three-season runner throughout his high school career for the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. Ben received the Ludlowe Outdoor Track Most Improved Award as a sophomore in 2016 and the Ludlowe Cross Country Scholar Athlete Award this past fall.

Ben plans on being a three-season runner at Colby College.

He volunteers as a Junior Deacon at his church.

Molly Murray, Trinity Catholic

Molly, among the quality youngsters profiled in the Top Ten Teens to Watch feature story in Stamford Magazine, has steadily improved as a student and athlete throughout high school and she will attend the College of the Holy Cross this coming fall.

This National Honor Society member had a GPA of 3.52 during her first three years and had a 3.73 GPA in the first quarter of her senior year.

Molly has been a four-year member and eventually a senior captain for both the girls volleyball and girls basketball teams. As a sophomore she received the Mickey Lione Jr. Scholarship for promising young students who display academic and extracurricular excellence and last June she received the Mary Kay Smith Award.

Molly is a member of the school’s Ambassadors Club and treasurer of the Business Club, and she volunteers at Norwalk’s Animal PAWS Shelter and as a coach for the Stamford Youngtimers girls basketball program.

Kimberley Holly, Westhill

Kimberley has maintained a 3.56 GPA while taking mostly Honors and AP classes and as a junior she balanced and budgeted her time so well that she achieved a 3.88 GPA while also working 30 hours per week at her two-year job and being among the top athletes for Westhill’s girls track and field program.

She was pleasantly surprised to be named team captain as a junior and eventually scored the most points at the city championship meet. She was the team MVP during her indoor season of 2016 in addition to being recipient of the Coaches Award four times.

Kimberley has also taken the time to volunteer at her local church and at the Brighton Gardens senior assisted living home.

Bobby Gummer, Norwalk

This National Honor Society member has an unweighted GPA of 3.6 and he will attend Stevens Institute of Technology this coming fall to study Quantitative Finance and also play for the club Division III ice hockey team.

Bobby was played defense and helped his high school ice hockey team qualify for the state tournament all three years he was on the team. He has also been on his high school golf team and is a very good skier.

He was co-president/founder of Norwalk High School’s Young Americans for Freedom Club.
